![]() ![]() During this passage of the poem, Angelou’s choice of words are strong and powerful this semantic field of violence is significant as words such as “cut”, “kill” and “shoot” are particularly aggressive and sharp. Angelou follows up this barrage of disparaging phrases by saying that ‘But still, like air, I’ll rise’. The use of the phrase “cut me with your eyes” is important as it further supports this idea and showcases how the way men look upon women can be threatening and is often highly disparaging. These quotes illustrate extreme gender prejudice and can be linked with the idea that men typically look upon women in a sexual manner and in essence objectify women as only sexual objects rather than a human being. Nonetheless, Angelou herself faced severe gender prejudice this is exemplified when she boldly states that ‘You may shoot me with your words, you may cut me with your eyes, you may kill me with your hatefulness’. Across the progression of human civilisation, only recently have women been able to gain equality within society and within the private sphere. There is a recurring theme in “Still I Rise” is that she “still rises” no matter what she’s faced with. She brags that you would think she has "oil wells pumping in living room,” and “diamonds at the meeting of thighs,” for all of the confidence she exudes. The speaker also asks her unspecified oppressor if her “sexiness ,” or if her” haughtiness ,” as they seem disappointed that they cannot keep her down. They will continue to persist with the same constancy as the natural world: “Just like moons and like suns / With the certainty of tides,” or “like dust,” they will rise. This act of "rising” is described as timeless and eternal, a magic trick that she and her community will perform. “You may shoot me with your words / You may cut me with your eyes / You may kill me with your hatefulness / But still, like air, I’ll rise.” The repetition of the word “you” seems to refer to both an embodied individual and the larger systems of white oppression built to target Black Americans, just as “I” seems to refer to both the speaker herself and the Black community as a whole.Īddressing her oppressor, the speaker declares her ability to “rise” above hatred and bigotry, which ranges from intentionally misrepresenting Black history to committing acts of physical violence. ![]() I personally wanted this movie to focus more on Bruce Banner's origin story and developing his character a lot more. The Incredible Hulk is better than Ang Lee's Hulk but not very significantly better. Betty Ross isn't very developed too, I wanted it to develop her relationship with her father it hardly does that. Bruce Banner isn't very developed too, they rush through his set up as Hulk and they don't explore the character enough. ![]() They don't really flesh out his character more so we can feel for him and that was a let down. Character development like I said Thunderbolt Ross isn't written very well, not only that he is also not developed properly. Her acting seemed kinda forced and it didn't feel natural.Ģ. Betty Ross played by Liv Tyler, great actress but I didn't think she pulled off a great performance here in my opinion. But for the most part I didn't feel that attachment and he overall isn't written very well, hell the boyfriend character seemed more concerned for Betty than Thunderbolt's concern for Betty. Throughout the film it seems like he doesn't care for his daughter's well being except for one moment where he screamed when it looked like she was in the explosion at the college action scene. Thunderbolt Ross who is played by William Hurt who does a decent job is not very likable unfortunately. They don't pour enough emotion or witty banter to make it very appealing. It does have some humorous moments but for the most part the characters talk like they are contractually obligated. Besides the action, I'm not very invested in the story and some of the characters' banter. The tone and writing unfortunately this film feels and stylistically looks dull. Tim Roth also does a great job playing the character of Emil Blonsky as well.ġ. Abomination is a great villain, he is similar to Hulk and the fight like I said before is awesome. The scenes with Hulk are awesome, especially the fight scene between Hulk and Abomination is great and thrilling.ģ. ![]() The action the entire movie is pretty thrilling, he gets chased down by the SWAT and army and it is pretty thrilling. Hulk looks very menacing and awesome, though he looks nothing like Edward Norton but oh well.Ģ. His performance is solid and he does a decent job. Edward Norton is really good as Bruce Banner. The Incredible Hulk is definitely an improvement over Ang Lee's Hulk but is it a huge significant improvement? Kinda but it still has some problems but some good moments I liked. ![]() |
